Recently Sandy and her handler Natashya, who are part of our Community Dog team in Scotland had the opportunity to collaborate with a Dementia Friendly Dunblane group on an animal assisted session.

These sessions were focused on bringing fun, laughter and meaningful social interaction through childhood reminiscence, as the group has experienced a difficult period following with the loss of several members through bereavement and others transitioning into care homes

The session was designed to promote positive memories, connection and emotional wellbeing. Alongside Natashya and Sandy, participants engaged in adapted playground games that had been suggested by the group, including hide and seek, golf, basketball and hopscotch in the garden.

"What a fun-filled day we had at the meeting centre!" a colleague at Dementia Friendly Dunblane commented. "We started the morning with some hopscotch fun with Jamie, Natashya and Sandy – lots of laughter, movement and a little bit of friendly competition."

The activities encouraged gentle physical movement, teamwork and conversation, with many members sharing memories of playing similar games in their childhood. The presence of Sandy helped create a relaxed and engaging atmosphere, stimulating interaction, encouraging participation and bringing joy.

The session was filled with smiles, laughter and a sense of achievement, helping to lift spirits and reinforce social bonds within the group while promoting inclusion, confidence and overall wellbeing.
